BATHERS
By DYLAN HAUSTHOR

“Ten years ago, a mentor of mine told me about the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting.

They described it as an impossible place—a utopic, broken, spicy, melting place. A place where every year there was inconceivable growth, countless tick bites, and deep love.

They also told me that every year there was mud wrestling. In 2024, I spent the summer at Skowhegan. There I heard even more about the faux-tradition of mud wrestling on that property, an unsanctioned but seemingly inevitable event of the summer that dated back decades. I spent a few days shoveling, raking, and lugging buckets of lake water until one night, we bathed.

First in the mud. Then in the lake.

Thank you forever:

gabby, chella, erica, rowan, res, hannah, trae, holly, emary & skowhegan.”
